Miscellaneous

Eclipse Thoughts–I saw the 2017 eclipse while writing this story and, at the time, decided to write up a short little post about my experiences. This is not part of Void Domain but is being preserved anyway because I want to. It might end up moving to a different location at the site, but for now, it is here.

  1. I didn’t see a contact form so I’m using the comment section, I hope that is okay. Feel free to delete or edit my comment otherwise.

So. My way from and to work includes some time in trains. Time I mainly bridge by reading, which led to me getting an eReader. I wrote a script to download and convert your books into EPUBs for my reading pleasure. Feel free to link them here or use them however you want (or just ignore them):

    [Link redacted]

Some minor changes I made: I added a simple cover, removed the “All of the following is completely optional to read. […]” part of the Author’s Notes, and added a link to this blog at the end.

If you’d like I can also make some other changes, for example add more reader formats (MOBI? Should be fairly easy.), add some kind of credits page, or change the cover (should be in grayscale though).

Void Domain is a great story with loveable/strong/memorable characters. I just finished book 3 and once again it was hard to stop reading. Thanks!

    1. I’ve removed your link while I think about it further. I don’t have any problem with personal epubs or anything, and I don’t really plan on seeking out publishing. I know that they get a little irritated about things like that. I have saved the link and might replace it later if I change my mind. For the time being, I’d like most people to have to visit the site. I think.

Glad you’re enjoying the story though!

      1. Hello, I would like to ask if you would be willing to send me the link, if you still have it – I just finished Book 3, and while I intend to finish the rest of Void Domain on your site as well, I would also like the option of saving it to my phone so that I can re-read it on plane flights and the like.

        1. Ahhhh… oh boy. Where did I save that at? I just spent a few minutes looking around for it. I’m sure I have it somewhere… Though I should probably just make my own epubs. I’m pretty sure a few of the earlier chapters received typo corrections and other minor updates since Seba made those epubs. (Unless they’ve updated them since. In which case, good job Seba!)

I’ll have to get back to you on that one.

        2. Sorry for taking so long to get back to you. I finally tracked it down. Please note that these epubs are not my creation. I have not read them to verify whether the text inside is identical to the work posted here on this WordPress. Depending on when these were created, I assume there could be plenty more typo corrections or other alterations on the official version than are reflected in these epubs. But until I get off my lazy ass and convert Void Domain to epub format, thank you Seba for making these available. Sorry for deleting the link two years or so ago 😛

With that out of the way, here is the link:

          1. Hey there, found this novel on topwebfiction and was thrilled to see it already completed (not a fan of waiting for chapters), and more thrilled to see it was written by TowerCurator, the author writing Vacant Throne, a story I binged up to what was current not long ago.

I prefer converting everything into epubs, however, as I like my book read to me with a text-to-speech reader, and that’s a pain to do one chapter at a time on my phone.

Didn’t like the idea of having old, unedited files, so after a bit of google-fu found this tool: [REDACTED]

In “manual” mode it can grab an up to date version of the story for reading when supplied the link to this page (the index), for those who prefer to use epubs instead of reading in a browser. It’s not perfect, but the text is all there and formatted correctly, though the table of contents is a mess—seems you don’t include chapter titles anywhere except on this page?—and I had to manually delete a bunch of links from the end of the list, plus a few at the beginning.

Anyhow, I’m like three chapters in, but all seems to be working, so I thought I’d share this here for those who come after. Feel free to delete the link and/or the entire message if you’d rather have people read on your site.

As an alternative, any reason why you never posted this story on Royal Road like you’re doing with Vacant Throne? Lots of tools exist to turn those stories into epubs. Lots more readers to find your work, too. Not many authors have such long, completed works available. Would probably help draw interest to your current work (and thus, patreon), after they finished reading this one.

            1. I don’t mind people grabbing the text to read however they need to, and the dropbox link above is basically there because I’m not making epub versions of Void Domain. But I am going to remove the link as VT’s epubs are about the only actual incentive to subscribe on Patreon. If someone needs epubs for text to speech or formatting or what have you, I’m sure it won’t take much work to find the tool you mentioned.

As for RR, Void Domain isn’t there mostly because I wasn’t really aware of the site before this finished. While I could put it up now, there are several sections that I am dissatisfied with (mostly around Book 004’s ending, but some elsewhere too) that I would prefer to edit before posting it anywhere else. And I just haven’t had the time or inclination to do any editing.

    1. Err can you delete this comment? I don’t feel that fitting anymore^^
I like your story, there are a few holes but that’s fine:the good points overshadow that greatly.
I found myself waiting your release with impatience;)

  2. Hi!)

I just want to thank you for your story, it is great and i love it)

I have started reading it when book 3 were still ongoing, and since that time I cant wait for each and every new chapter)

    So, again, thank you)

PS: If I may add a PR-suggestion(not in a proofreading meaning), take a look at royalroadl.com and reddit.com/r/noveltranslations/, as a places to publisize or just promote your novel.
There is a pretty big community on both of this places and because of quality of your work(it is good) I believe a lot of people will start reading and enjoing it.

As an example how it works take a look at this novels:
    1) Mother of learning (https://www.fictionpress.com/u/804592/nobody103), is using reddit as a way to equire bigger readers-base, proof -> (https://www.reddit.com/r/noveltranslations/comments/54hw6s/en_mother_of_learning_chapter_59_one_step_forward/)

    2) Iron teeth (ironteethserial.com/table-of-contents/), for the same purpose is using royalroad, but post 1 less chapter there, in order to guarantee that readers are still going to author-sama*s place, proof->(https://royalroadl.com/fiction/4293)

I believe that your story will quickly get in top on both this places)

    1. Thanks! I could probably start posting chapter links on reddit. I don’t know that I’m too interested in maintaining copies of Void Domain on two separate sites however, so I’ll probably skip over the royalroad site for now. Maybe in the future.

    1. Sorry, the chapter hadn’t been posted when you commented. I actually typed it out in advance of the chapter’s scheduling because I haven’t found a way to automate updating already posted pages/posts.

      But it is out now!

  3. >Finishes vol 1.
Right not reading any more of this.
    >2 days later (now)
Actually I’m really curious to see how this pans out…

Well then… (maybe ignore the ramblings of someone who should be sleeping :p )

  4. I don’t know if this is the right section to post this, but I guess I won’t find a better spot.

It’s kind of a review (for book 1) and my personal explanation for abandoning the story past that threshold.

For starters, my overall opinion on this story. It’s good, great even. I don’t regret having read through the first volume in one sitting. All in all, I’d be torn giving this story at least a four out of five stars.

Alright, let’s get a bit more specific. Let’s take a look at your grammar and your style. Both are great, I didn’t notice any issues with spelling nor wording. Your style reads well, a good narrative.

But I honestly found that you are somewhat lacking in regards to painting the finer details out. With a few exceptions where you explicitly went out of your way, characters and scenes were somewhat vague. By the way, that’s also where you lost a majority of that fifth star.

Now, story! I know that there are nine more volumes. But my opinion here is on the first volume only, which by far is the most important one.

The story seems to be a bit more of a western fantasy but during a more modern age, through the latter I’m a little unsure about. This story could be set anywhere between the early 1900s until all the way to 2018.

You went out of your way to define a specific subset of various magical practices, I found the school itself feeling rather vague and somewhat … well. It seriously fell into the background – there was a school. But it was mostly a backdrop, the classroom scenes you had didn’t really carry that flair of a school setting or didn’t leave enough an impression and had me already forget about it.

All in all, a great story. I felt the conclusion of the story being a bit of a misfit though. It just sticks out like a sore thumb, that apology would’ve been a better introduction (+execution) as vol2 during it’s first chapter.

That “apology” is other major thing I really can complain about. You should reconsider whether you want to leave it as it is.

I mean, this story already concluded – so it’s too late for that, but I guess you might appreciate some input on it.

Right, and the reason for why I abandoned the story past the first volume. It’s a bit personal.

I hate it when people try to focus on “other characters” at the expense of their story lead. The issue with this is, when you didn’t already establish a tight bond between these characters and your readers they just feel like … others.

To me, the other characters which I got attached to would be: who recruited Eva, the Vet/Nurse (Surprise!), The runaway Necromancer, Sister Cross, Adventurous Mama that got bitten by African vampires and Arachne.

To me, these are the only characters which I can tolerate a scene with. The other characters simply lacked the impression or plainly haven’t captured my attention.

These characters either are already well developed, or (I think so) will become irrelevant – I’m assuming the characters you wish to develop were Eve her friends and others surrounding her. Which had me back out, I plainly don’t want to read further knowing that I’d quickly lose interest and skim over some POV that I don’t care and don’t understand anything further down the road because it ties to something else which is in that part that I plainly don’t want to bother reading.

Happened with many stories before, we read to enjoy ourself. And we don’t enjoy having to read a perspective of a character you plainly aren’t interested in – and oftentimes authors fail to nurture that kinda interest, trying to force it on people (which never works) or not even bother, and give meaning to the character or develop them by focusing on them.

Now, I don’t know how you would design vol2 – I might be doing the story injustice here. Maybe you worked some real magic, managing to wake interest before exploring, but oftentimes it isn’t anywhere close to it and since I’m a pessimist I’ll presume you just swapped characters and focused on advancing the story through them.

All in all, I wanted to thank you for your first volume – I enjoyed reading it. I wish you the best with your upcoming works! 🙂
